C-sections should be done only when necessary - WHO

Image
The  World Health Organisation (WHO)  has called for a reduction in the rate of medically unnecessary C-sections, and instead approach them on a case-by-case basis.   According to WHO, there’s a threshold for when the procedure might cause more harm than good and recent studies have put that threshold at about 10%, and according to  MSN , as rates rise in that direction, the number of maternal and newborn deaths in the population decreases. While acknowledging the advantages of C-sections, they are nonetheless still a surgery open to possible complications, leading the body's urge for the surgery to be done only when necessary. According to WHO, by putting only those who need them under the knife for C-sections, the money and resources needed to treat complications can be used for others' health care needs. Dr. Marleen Temmerman , director of WHO’s Department of Reproductive Health and Research commenting on this said, “These conclusions highlight...

See Proven Connection between 'Soft drinks' and Diabetes

Image
A study has shown that replacing even one serving of a sugary drink a day with water or unsweetened tea or coffee can reduce our risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 14 to 25%. According to data from the  EPIC-Norfolk  study, following a population-level analysis that first began in 1993, the dietary habits of over 25,000 people living in  Norfolk, England  were studied across a 11-year long span. They were periodically checked on and their diets were reevaluated via 7-day food diaries. By the end, 847 people came down with type 2 diabetes. It was discovered that the more of a total day’s worth of calories was taken from sugary drinks (including soft drinks and fruit juices), the greater the risk of diabetes. According to the research authors,   “each 5 percent higher intake was associated with an 18 percent higher incidence of type 2 diabetes,” As reported by  MSN , the detailed cataloging of the participants’ diets allowed the authors...

Experts say marijuana use can lead to stunted growth in teen boys

Image
In recent times, medical experts have alluded to the medical advantages of marijuana. But it appears this can only be after a certain age as a study has shown that use of marijuana with teen boys can lead to stunted growth. According to the study presented at the  European Congress of Endocrinology  in  Dublin, Ireland , researchers at  Pir Mehr Ali Shah Agriculture University Rawalpindi  in  Pakistan  found boys who smoke marijuana through puberty will stunt their growth due to a decrease in growth hormone levels. Speaking on the finding,  Dr. Syed Shakeel Raza Rizvi , lead author of the study said: "Early puberty is associated with younger age of onset of drinking and smoking, and early matures have higher levels of substance abuse because they enter the risk period at an early level of emotional maturity,” He further said that   "marijuana use may provoke a stress response that stimulates onset of puberty but suppresses g...

Abolish Indonesia Military Virginity Test; Human Rights Group cries Out

Image
It is true that Indonesia which is the latest moslem community in the world conducts a virginity test for female folks wishing to join its Army. They must have believed that virgins are more agile and more dedicated to the military work, but human right groups are calling for the abolishment of such act saying that the test has no scientific validity. "The Indonesian armed forces should recognize that harmful and humiliating 'virginity tests' on women recruits do nothing to strengthen national security," said Nisha Varia, HRW's women's rights advocacy director. A human rights group urged Indonesia to abolish invasive "virginity tests" for female recruits and the fiancees of military officers in its armed forces, saying international treaties had described the practice as degrading and cruel. President Joko Widodo should ask military hospitals immediately to stop administering the tests, which violate international human rights treaties that Indon...

WHO Warns That Ebola May Be Transmitted Sexually

Image
The World Health Organisation has issued an interim advice on the possibility of Ebola Virus of being sexually transmitted. The WHO had directed all Ebola survivors and their sexual partners to receive counselling to guard against possible transmission of the disease. This is contained in a statement made available by WHO to newsmen in Lagos on Saturday. It indicated that the sexual transmission of the Ebola Virus had yet to be established. WHO said, “The sexual transmission of the Ebola Virus from males to females is a strong possibility, but has not yet been proven; less probable, but theoretically possible. “Studies have shown that Ebola virus can be isolated from semen up to 82 days after symptom onset. “A recent case investigation identified genetic material (RNA) from the virus by nucleic acid amplification tests (such as RT-PCR) 199 days after symptom onset. “This is well beyond the period of virus detecting ability in the blood of survivors and long after recovery from illnes...

Ebola Found in Dr.'s Eye Months After He Was Cured Of Ebola

Image
This is a very confusing situation that left Dr. Ian Crozier's medical team amazed, he had two blue eyes before he got Ebola, after treatment and declared free, his sight started fading, left eye colour changed with intense pain only for Doctors to find out that Ebola survived in his eyes. When Dr. Ian Crozier was released from Emory University Hospital in October after a long, brutal fight with Ebola that nearly ended his life, his medical team thought he was cured. But less than two months later, he was back at the hospital with fading sight, intense pain and soaring pressure in his left eye. Test results were chilling: The inside of Dr. Crozier’s eye was teeming with Ebola. His doctors were amazed. They had considered the possibility that the virus had invaded his eye, but they had not really expected to find it. Months had passed since Dr. Crozier became ill while working in an Ebola treatment ward in Sierra Leone as a volunteer for the World Health Organization. ...

Good News; Liberia Is Free of Ebola, World Health Organization Declares

This sounds like the best news so far, Liberia has finally been declared free of Ebola by WHO. “The outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Liberia is over,” the W.H.O. said in a statement. The president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, planned to attend ceremonies later in the morning to commemorate the dead and celebrate survivors. As of Saturday, two maximum incubation periods of the virus, a total of 42 days, had passed since the burial of the last person confirmed to have had Ebola in Liberia, fulfilling the official criteria for concluding that human-to-human transmission of the virus has ended. According to the W.H.O., there were more than 3,000 confirmed Ebola cases in Liberia, and a further 7,400 suspected or probable cases, with more than 4,700 deaths estimated to have occurred since the outbreak was declared there in March of 2014. Among the dead were 189 health care workers. “I’m particularly struck by the significant progress we have made as a country and as a peop...
