The European Union (EU) has berated the pervasive poverty in Nigeria, which it regarded as a rich country, calling on the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari to do something to change reverse the poverty in the country when he is sworn-in on 29 May.

The EU also reminded the president-elect of his promises before and after the March 28 presidential election, noting that Buhari’s three priority objectives should be pursued vigorously.
According to the body of European countries, Buhari’s first objective of swiftly ending the insurgency in the North East and restore peace and stability; his vow to eradicate corruption as well as his promise  to put policies in place to put Nigeria’s economy on a proper footing were all in the right direction.
The EU, which made these positions on Saturday, charging Buhari to ensure that Nigerians enjoy the dividends of democracy, explaining that democracy has no meaning to the common man except it translates into the improvement in their standards of living.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Michel Arrion, made the call at the Europe Day 2015 in Abuja, saying: “But democracy only makes meaning to the common man to the extent that it delivers good governance, creates opportunities and improves the quality of living.
“Nigeria is rich, but Nigerians are poor. The incoming administration will have a lot to do in this regard.”
He also called on the new government to turn the massive population into a formidable wealth-generating productive force, adding that the wealth should also be “equally or rather equitably shared among all citizens,” he said.
Arrion stated that the world isa expecting a new Nigeria “with the basic freedoms that distinguish democratic societies.”
“The government must ensure that the basic freedoms including economic rights and welfare are not the exclusive preserve of a privileged few.
He said that these goals set for the incoming government match closely the European Union’s vision for the country.
“Let me add a fourth objective that is very important for the European Union: regional integration,” he said.
